Sofia is effectively the whole of Bulgaria's film industry: when UNESCO named it a City of Film in 2014, the mayor said nearly all of the country's film professionals live and work there. Its big asset is Nu Boyana Film Studios, with 10 sound stages, a 1,200 square metre water tank and standing New York, London and Roman sets, backed by a national 25% rebate for long form work.

Music Weeks in Sofia, first held in May 1970, is the city's long running international festival, filling the National Palace of Culture and other halls through May and June. The newer Sofia Live Festival, launched in 2020, runs in late June across four stages at Arena Sofia and the Kolodrum cycling track in King Boris III's Garden, putting original music by young Bulgarian acts alongside international names.
